Concept Note

Philosophy, a domain of human thoughts, has drastically evolved through the centuries ever since its emergence in the ancient period as metaphysics Philosophical thoughts and writings have historically helped shape many of the disciplines in academics and provided them with proper theoretical grounding The fields of literature and philosophy have been mutually benefiting from each other through a range of philosophical and theoretical exchanges carried down the periods Philosophical writings have often theorized the socio political and cultural issues of different periods in the West and India and provided a theoretical framework to contextualize the subject position emerging out of such
milieu Different philosophical trajectories that existed in various time frames both in West and India attempted to philosophize the idea of man, reason, justice, mind and body dualism, social categories like caste, class, race, gender, sexuality, ability, etc As Foucault has influentially argued in his essay Nietzsche, Genealogy, History ” 1977 All knowledge rests upon injustice, that there is no right, not even in the act of knowing, to truth or a foundation for truth, and that the instinct for knowledge is malicious (something murderous, opposed to the happiness of mankind) ” With the onset of modern philosophy beginning with Structuralism, the abstract concepts like truth, beauty, aesthetics, knowledge, etc came to be radically interrogated and their theoretical/philosophical foundations were called into question While this is the prominent trend in the Western Philosophy, the Indian Philosophy particularly in the late Twentieth Century witnessed a fundamental shift towards the idea of marginality, theorizing the subjectivity of oppressions based on caste, class, gender, disability, religion and region This Three Day National Webinar will strive to explore such philosophical trajectories emerged in the late Twentieth Century in the West and India The webinar will also attempt to map out some of the major emerging trends in philosophy so as to orient the participants with the contemporary developments in Indian and Western Philosophy The following are the thrust areas for discussion
