With the support of the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union, the Consortium of Mykolas Romeris University (Lithuania) (coordinator), Riga Stradins University (Latvia), the Catholic University in Ruzomberok (Slovakia) and the ISCTE University Institute of Lisbon (Portugal) presents the European Joint Master in Social Work with Children and Youth The ESWOCHY programme is based on three pillars: humanistic perspective, intercultural communication and digital social work.

Details

The aim of ESWOCHY is to prepare highly skilled professionals to be leaders in the field of international, intercultural and comparative social work with children and youth. The students will possess an educational and experiential foundation that combines theories of social work, social sciences, humanities and indigenous knowledge, comparative international research, policy development and the newest knowledge of using ICT in social work practice with children and youth.

The duration of ESWOCHY is 2 years (120 ECTS).

The theoretical study block is designed to train specialists with knowledge of national and European children and youth policy trends, human rights and human diversity, able to plan, coordinate and innovate in social service, responding to the patterns of modern youth socialization, effectively organizing social work with various youth groups, career guidance and liberation of self-actualization and fulfilment. An emphasis is also on intercultural competences such as intercultural mediation that ensure dialogue between different ethnic groups, enabling the education of society, especially children and young people, about other cultures. This helps to expand students’ abilities to work with children and youth in an international, multicultural perspective. Exceptional attention is on digital social work and entrepreneurship skills of students. Internship “Scientific Research Practice” is an integral part of the study process and aims to help students to integrate theory, research-based knowledge and practical social work strategies and skills, through different social work activities with children and youth developing cultural sensitivity and respect for diversities and enabling students to collect data for their master thesis.

Students will study in different Consortium Universities each semester:

• 1st Semester Mykolas Romeris University (LT),
• 2nd semester Riga Stradins University (LV),
• 3rd semester Catholic University in Ruzomberok (SK)
• 4th semester ISCTE-University Institute of Lisbon (PT).

ESWOCHY clearly states its objectives as follows:

• Develop students’ competence to manage information, integrate theoretical knowledge and practical experience in social work with children and youths;
• Develop the students’ analytic expertise and competence in carrying out comparative research and implementing the results in social work practice with children and youth;
• Enable students to take leadership, entrepreneurship, managements and digitals competence in providing services for children and youth within the context of cultural understanding;
• Enable students to systematically and critically analyse policy documents, to be initiative and promote innovations in ensuring the well-being of children and youth;
• Enable students to plan personal learning and career process, pursue the personal and professional growth continuously building their knowledge and skills to provide the most current, beneficial, and culturally appropriate services to children and youths.

Academic structure and content

Each semester starts with one-day introductory activities: welcome meeting, administrative issues, introduction to the electronic resources of the university that students will use throughout the programmeas well as the Moodle system, tour to the Library and around the Universities. Two teachers from different universities are responsible for a course.Each partner has a responsible person for research (methodologist), internship (supervisor) and a programme coordinator (Programme Committee member).

• Semester 1: MRU, Lithuania: The first semester starts with one-day an icebreaking/teambuilding. Informational seminars “Procedure of Studies at MRU” and “Academic ethics and Academic writing at Mykolas Romeris University” will be organized. After the introductory day, is start to implementing ESWOCHY courses of the 1st semester: Social Work Theories, Professional Development and Supervision in Social Work (including field visits), Social Research Methodology, Comparative European Social Policy for Children and Youth, Master Thesis. Field visits is complemented by the course Professional Development and Supervision in Social Work.
• Semester 2 (RSU, Latvia): The semester starts with one-day introductory activities. After the introductory day, is start to implementing ESWOCHY courses of the 2nd semester: Innovative Approach to Management and Leadership in Social Work, Interactive Methods Working with Children and Youth (including field visits), Social Work with Family (including field visits), Master Thesis and 1 course of optional courses list (Children and Youth Behaviours by Bio-psycho-social Aspects, Children and Youth Career Guidance, Cross-Cultural Mediation). Field visits are complemented by the courses Interactive Methods Working with Children and Youth, Social Work with Family.
• Semester 3 (CU, Slovakia): The semester starts with one-day introductory activities. After the introductory day, is start to implementingESWOCHY courses of the 3rd semester: Digital Social Work with Children and Youth, Children and Youth Intercultural Communication, Socio-Cultural Empowerment of Different Youth Groups, Development and Evaluation of Social Projects, Scientific Research Practice, Master Thesis.
• Semester 4 (ISCTE-IUL, Portugal): The semester starts with one-day introductory activities. Then starts of intensive workshop Master Thesis Project.At the end of the 4th semester defense of master’s theses is organized.

Eligibility

In order for a student application for the Programme to be taken into consideration, the candidate must comply with the minimum requirements with regard to administrative prerequisites, academic prerequisites and language prerequisites.

• Administrative prerequisites are:
• Compliance with the application calendar and deadlines;
• Submission of a complete set of required application documents in English language versions (certified English translation if required).

• Academic prerequisites are:
• Applicants eligible for the Programme must be the holders of Bachelor’s degree/1st Cycle or of the equivalent University level higher education degree in the field of Social sciences. Graduates from other fields of studies can be admitted if their completed education is assessed by the Universities (Programme Committee) as equivalent/sufficient.
• Language prerequisites are:
• Proficiency in written and spoken English at a B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CECR) duly confirmed by language certificates specified in the Call for Applications as per Point 2 of this Annex.
• Self-funded students
• Applicants not awarded an EMJMD scholarship grant may be admitted in the Programme as self-funded students on the condition that they:
• meet all the requirements of the Programme.
• comply with visa requirements in the countries they intend to go;
• Pay the full tuition fee for the whole duration of the Programme at enrollment.

Benefits

For the EMJMD scholarships, students are divided in two categories: Programme countries students and Partner countries students. See the European website for an explanation of these categories.

The EMJMD scholarships are including student participation costs (including the tuition fees, full insurance coverage and any other mandatory costs related to student participation in the course), a contribution to student travel and installation cost and a subsistence allowance for the entire duration of the EMJMD study programme.

Contribution to subsistence costs

• 1 000 EUR per month for the entire duration of the EMJMD study programme (24 months maximum).
• Contribution to subsistence costs will neither be given to the scholarship holders for the EMJMD periods (study/research/placement/thesis preparation) spent in their country of residence, nor to scholarship holders from a Partner Country for the EMJMD periods exceeding one trimester (i.e. 3 months or the equivalent of 15 ECTS credits) spent in any Partner Country.

Contribution to the travel and installation costs

• 1 000 EUR per year per scholarship holder resident in a Programme Country for travel costs
• 2 000 EUR per year for travel costs + 1.000 EUR for installation costs for a scholarship holder, resident in a Partner Country less than 4000 KM from the EMJMD coordinating HEI.
• 3000 EUR per year for travel costs + 1.000 EUR for installation costs for a scholarship holder, resident in a Partner Country further than 4000 KM or more from the EMJMD coordinating HEI.

Contribution to participation costs

• Upon formal agreement with the student at the time of signature of the Student Agreement, the Coordinating Institution will deduct the Participation Costs directly from the contribution to participation costs at the beginning of each academic year. This scholarship component will not be therefore paid to the student.
• Erasmus+ EMJMD Scholarship rules
• Scholarships are awarded only for participation in the complete EMJMD programme (24 months).
• Students who have already obtained an EMJMD scholarship or an Erasmus Mundus Master Course/Joint Doctorate scholarship are NOT eligible to receive another scholarship under EMJMD.
• EMJMD scholarship holders cannot at the same time be beneficiaries of a grant for student or staff mobility in the framework of other higher education programmes funded by the EU budget.
• There are maximum 3 grants for students of the same nationality.
• Contribution to subsistence costs will not be given to the scholarship holders for the EMJMD periods (study/research/placement/thesis preparation) spent in their country of residence.
• Contribution to subsistence costs will not be given to scholarships holders from a Partner Country for the EMJMD periods exceeding one trimester (i.e., three months or the equivalent of 15 ECTS credits) spent in any Partner Country.
• Applicants with more than one nationality have to chose one nationality and apply with that one.
• The 12 months residence rule should be observed.
• The top students on the reserve list will be offered a self-paying position in the programme.
