Dialogues on Kerala Development is a triennial conference series envisaged by CSES to bring together social scientists, academicians and practitioners working on different facets of Kerala’s development. The goal is to facilitate multi-disciplinary deliberations focusing on Kerala’s development issues to contribute towards transformative policy making. The theme for the CSES Dialogues on Kerala Development #1 is “Challenges of Health and Demographic Transition”

Kerala has been a front runner in India with respect to most of the health and health care utilisation indicators across health surveys from time to time. The state has been able to demonstrate performances on indicators such as infant and child mortality which are comparable with much more advanced regions in the world. In terms of demographic transition,
Kerala has demonstrated a pattern different from the rest of the country. Thanks to advancements in health and increased life expectancy, the proportion of the elderly is the highest in the country. The epidemiological transition in the state is also quite evident, with a marked difference in the morbidity profile of the state in comparison to the other regions. As understood,
such transitions lead to changing demand for health care, and the health systems must be prepared for the same. There are also challenges faced by marginalised communities identified as outliers to the Kerala model of development, i.e., such as tribal communities, fisherfolk, and other vulnerable communities such as migrant workers, persons with disabilities, the elderly, etc.

Recent years also brought in its wake colossal challenges in the form of unprecedented natural calamities and a pandemic. Hence the challenges that the state faces are much different from the ones at the national level and deserve a dedicated dialogue. The interventions by the state, as well as national programmes that address different concerns, also need to be studied and discussed in detail. Further, with decentralisation, there are more local-level interventions in the public health system

CSES Dialogues 2023 aims to deliberate upon

  • Demographic transition and implications on health.
  • Preparedness of health systems to address the transition and newer challenges and health shocks.
  • Epidemiological transition and state-specific concerns
  • Multi-sectoral responses towards existing and emerging challenges
  • Differential experiences of diverse groups in navigating through health adversities.
  • Bridging existing evidence gaps through the creation and sharing of knowledge
