What is Walking Art?

According to WikipediaWalking Art is the act of walking as an artistic practice. It ‘has gathered practitioners from nearly every field […and] blurs the borders between the arts, between artist and audience’. While walking artists have diverse interests and backgrounds, many scholars have foregrounded the way it explores the connections between the mind and body, as well as space and time. Some artists consider walking an artistic end in itself, while others use walking as a means of mark-making, storytelling, social practice, or creating work in other artistic media. Despite emerging from a variety of artistic and literary traditions, a ‘common feature [of walking art] is the engagement of the body in a process of walking through a landscape based on a specific artistic design.”

About Walk Listen Create

WLC was officially founded in 2021 as an NGO in Belgium, but we came together in 2019, around the implementation of the first Sound Walk September, itself a consequence of Sound Walk Sunday 2017.

About the Marsarto Awards

The Marŝarto Awards recognise exceptional walking art created in the previous year. The Awards culminate in October, coinciding with Walktober, the global call to promote walking as a creative experience.

Any walking piece created during the previous 12 months, after the end of the previous year’s October, and submitted to the walk · listen · create website, is eligible. Soundwalks are not eligible. For these fine works, we host the Sound Walk September Awards.

Work can include a variety of formats, approaches, and subjects, from a wide range of creative disciplines, including arts, heritage and history, health and wellbeing, social practices, journalism, performance, literature and theatre, ecology, tourism, and more.
