INTERNATIONAL DAY OF WOMEN AND GIRLS IN SCIENCE
During the early days of civilisation there was equality between men and women Subsequently, domination of men over women gradually increased and later a patriarchal society Was established. In such a society women had to become submissive. They were almost bound to tolerate Domination of men. In different spheres of society women was deprived of scopes and freedom, through a few women had become able to uplift themselves in that male dominated society. However, they were exception. In general, women’s education and accomplishment were not proportionate to The worth of women. Naturally women’s participation in the study of science
Was limited As a result, role of women an achievers of inventions of science as well as applications of science was not worth mentioning. Subsequently women began to feel that their right could be
Saved by themselves only. They tried to become united and a worldwide movement for restoration of their right and protection of such right gradually granulated.
Later it was observed that women had become highly interested in science and technology. As a result number of successful women in different branches of science began to increase.
In the advanced countries of the world women achieved notable success in Science and Technology. French Scientist Marie Curie discovered the radioactive elements ‘Radium ‘and ‘Polonium and coined the term “Radioactivity”, Ada Lovelace, Rosalind Franklin, Katherine Johnson (NASA pioneer)are bright examples. In India also women have played important role In development and smooth advancement of science and technology. Some examples Are Kamala Sohonie, Seijata Ramdorai (Mathematics), Karidhal Srivastava & Kalpana Chawla in Space Science), vatsala Tirumalai (Neuro Science), Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyaya (Computer science). Besides, 54 female scientists are working in Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) An idea of celebrating a particular day for recognizing women’s contribution for spreading of science was developed .Following This idea, The General Assembly, on 22nd. December, 2015, decided to observe 11 February as the annual International Bay, to recognize the critical role of women and girls girl’s in spreading of science and technology, Through Resolution A/RES/70/212.It aims to promote full and
equal access and participation for women and girls in science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
The “International Day of women and girls in science” has quickly became a significant global event promoting gender equality in STEM fields .
The theme for International Day of women and Girls in Science 2023’ was. Innovate, Demonstrate, Elevate, Advance (IDEA) for bringing communities forward for sustainable. And equitable development.
This Theme emphasizes the crucial role that women and girls in science play in driving innovation, demonstrating solutions, advancing elevating Their voices and sustainable and equitable development for communities worldwide.
This year, International Day of women and Girls in Science’ will be celebrated on 11th February, 2024. The official theme for the event has not been announced. So We need to wait for an official announcement from the organisation which is going to celebrate the Day.
