WOMEN AND GIRLS IN SCIENCE LEADERSHIP , A NEW ERA FOR SUSTAINABILITY

International day of women and girls in science is observed on 11th November every year . It works as a tribute to the achievements and contributions in science , technology , engineering and mathematics .The 2024 theme is , “ WOMEN AND GIRLS IN SCIENCE LEADERSHIP , A NEW ERA FOR SUSTAINABILITY .

This International day was established on March 14 , 2011 , when the commission recognised the need for women's participation in education, science and technology . World benefits from having more female leaders in science as they bring in lived experience , collaborative and inclusive approaches ,in their work that simply expands the general knowledge in any field . Female in science add value in research by bringing in more creativity arising from their social and public good approach to challenges . More women in Leadership positions in the business World can have a stronger impact on overall society . It helps in creating role models for future generations and also it breaks the stereotypes of the society in all fields .

A feminine approach to Leadership is not a mere reflection of masculine model anymore .it is distinctive way of leading marked by inclusiveness , empathy and collaboration . Female leaders demonstrate more transformational Leadership styles . It is crucial for creating more innovative , inclusive and successful organisation . Despite advancements in women’s higher education , A persistent gender exists in STEM discipline globally . There are several achievements in women’s contribution to science including women like Shakuntala Devi , Kalpana Chawla, etc . They have made a groundbreaking contributions to various scientific fields . Women contribute 30 percent of researchers worldwide . This day acknowledges these contributions and calls for addressing the gender gap .

The celebration of this day holds paramount significance by promoting gender equality , highlighting achievements . This helps in inspiring future generations and also advocates for greater inclusion od women in Leadership roles withing the scientific community.

Globally various events and activities are organised including conference , workshops , recognition of role models , STEM outreach programs and social media campaigns using hashtags also . however, various challenges are faced by the women despite progress , such as early biases , societal expectations and on ground experiences . Opportunities in the form of grants , scholarships and initiatives are available showcasing India’s commitment to promoting gender equality in science and technology .

Conclusion : the International day of women and girls in science underscores the significance of diversity and inclusivity in the scientific community . It honours women who have paved the way for future generations and reaffirms the commitment to gender parity in science . The day serves as a reminder to encourage and support women and girls in scientific fields , valuing their contributions to knowledge and innovation .
