DESCRIPTION:
The DOE SC programme in Basic Energy Sciences (BES) invites new and renewal submissions in Computational Chemical Sciences from small groups (of 2-3 Principal Investigators [PIs]) and integrated interdisciplinary teams (usually from multiple institutions) (CCS). Single-investigator applications are incompatible with the FOA's goals. CCS aims to develop skills that enable for the modelling and simulation of new or previously inaccessible complicated chemical systems, as well as dramatic advances in fidelity, scalability, and throughput. Expertise in domain domains (e.g., electrical structure, chemical dynamics, statistical mechanics, etc.) as well as other areas critical to the advancement of computational tools, such as data science, algorithm development, and software architectures, should be brought together by teams. Chemical transformations and energy transduction processes will be prioritised in BES-supported basic research on scientific subjects underpinning clean-energy technologies and disruptive, low-carbon manufacturing at many scales in complex environments and systems.
The DOE Exascale Computing Initiative will continue to be supported by CCS (ECI). The ECI aims to accelerate research and development in order to address critical exascale challenges and maximise the advantages of high-performance computing. BES' commitment to ECI is strengthened by this FOA, which calls for the development of open-source software that can fully use present and future exascale computing infrastructure.
