Registrations are open for Free Online Course on Doing Research on Religion in Social Sciences by TISS. The last date of registration is 30 December.
About the Course
The course offers a broad overview of doing research on religion in social sciences and the challenges of ‘knowing’ it ‘objectively’.
The principal objective of the course is to engage with religion as a social reality and, thus, explore the possibilities of widening the understanding of ‘religious’ phenomena through creative social science research. In due process, the course intends to go beyond the dominant tropes of doing research on religion and challenges the modernist and post-modernist framework of analysis.
The complex social realities within which multiple religious identities operate in a setting like India provides us an opportune moment to broaden our horizon of understanding and open up a dialogue on doing research on religion.
We are witness to the fact that as a historian, sociologist, anthropologist, political scientist or researcher in the cultural study, any attempt to understand religion is necessarily marred by the limitation of existing tools and methods of social sciences.
From the vantage point of ‘politics of knowledge’, the course offers a fresh insight into the existing limitations of research in social sciences and opens a new window of opportunity for those who are keen to widen the scope of research on religion.
