Introduction

Despite the empowering pride culture that has evolved globally in the past half-century, the LGBTQ+ community continues to face widespread discrimination. They are often subjected to violence, inequality and abuse because of their identity and sexual orientation. Owing to this, they bear heavy psychological burden and frustration that stems from not coming out and expressing their concerns freely. Today, the invisibility of this community and its concerns has become an enormous global challenge. Their interest often goes unrepresented and unaddressed by the authorities due to barriers in public and political participation of this community. In the light of the abovementioned, it becomes imperative to take the initiative to acknowledge their presence, take cognisance of their predicament and work towards their interest. The quotidian experiences of people from this community underscore how important it is to be vocal about these overleaped issues and find solutions that lead to fair and equal treatment.

Objective

The purpose of this book will be to lay bare the harsh realities of the LGBTQAI+ community. It will draw the reader’s attention to issues such as violation of their rights, disparities in access to basic amenities such as healthcare, employment, security, so on and so forth. This book will facilitate a profound understanding of their concerns, enabling people to decipher their predicament, further leading them to take necessary actions by augmenting support. The book chapters will be organised into seven sections that will touch upon different domains of their struggle and existence. Section 1, Individual and society, will discuss what it means to be a person belonging to the LGBTQ+ community, the evolution of the gay community and the challenges faced by them, the rejection they face from their own families when they come out and the atrocities inflicted on them due to the traditional societal norms. Section II, LGBTQ+, Community and Education, talks about the inclusion of the LGTBQ+ community in academia, barriers to accomplishing the ideals of equality and prejudices the queer students face in this domain. Section III, Queer in Popular Culture and Mass Media, will talk about the portrayal of the LGBTQ+ community in books, journals, magazines, radio, television, social media, films, advertising, so on and so forth, and how these projections influence the collective consciousness of the consumers. It will talk about their concerns and issues in mainstream media and how people from this community express their culture and gain visibility via media. Section IV, Environment and LGBTQ+ community will engage in a discussion on how climate change impacts the LGTBQ+ community differently as they have trammelled access to the resources, their ability to relocate, how people of this community face heightened suffering at all stages of natural disaster which are becoming more frequent due to climate change. It also talks about Queer Ecology, which allows scholars to reimagine cultural binaries between “natural and unnatural”. Section V, LGBTQ+ Community and Commerce will talk about queer inclusion in workplace, queer diversity training, how certain businesses pretend to align with the interests of the queer community for the sole purpose of reaping profits and shall also discuss the impact of rainbow washing on commerce and industry. Section VI, LGBTQ+ Community and Healthcare, will articulate the challenges this community faces in terms of healthcare, the impact of the pandemic on queer community and how healthcare providers are positioned to support their equality and health. Section VII, Law and LGBTQ+ community will broach views and recommendations on legal protection and rights guaranteed to this community while also highlighting a flurry of cases where these rights and privileges are not honoured in praxis.

Target Audience

The book will be of particular interest to all those wanting to learn about gender and the contemporary issues concerning the LGBTQ+ community on a global scale. Given its multidisciplinary scope, the book will prove to be a valuable resource for researchers, scholars, teachers, policymakers who are willing to deepen their understanding of intricacies surrounding the existence of the queer community. This book will also attempt to find answers to various predicaments by broaching suggestions and recommendations pivoting around the mundane realities of queer people.
