Submissions are invited for The Environmental Photographer of the Year Competition 2023 by CIWEM. The last date of submission is August 30, 2023.

About the Competition

The Environmental Photographer of the Year competition (EPOTY) is organised by the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM), with the aim to showcase the most inspirational environmental photography from around the globe.



CIWEM pledges to inform and educate the public and experts alike, through materials that are grounded in fact, evidence, and science. EPOTY supports this mission as it harnesses the power of storytelling and so makes events from across the world more accessible. The competition highlights environmental issues by presenting:

  • Challenging and inspiring photos.
  • Photo journalistic narratives.
  • Celebrations of innovation and hope.

Now in its 16th year, The Environmental Photographer of the Year competition showcases the most inspirational environmental photography from around the world. The award celebrates humanity’s ability to survive and innovate and showcases thought-provoking images that call attention to our impact and inspire us to live sustainably.

The competition is free to enter for all agesEntries are open until 30 August and winners will be announced in November 2023.

Categories and Prizes

1. Environmental Photographer of the Year

  • The top award will be granted to a single photo that furthers people’s understanding of the causes and effects of environmental change and social inequality, highlights solutions to the climate and ecological emergency, and inspires us to live sustainably. 
  • This category is open to professional and amateur photographers of all ages, from all over the world. The winner will receive a £5,000 (INR 517,872 approx) cash prize in addition to an interview in CIWEM’s Environment Magazine, a profile on WaterBear’s website, and a feature on Nikon Europe’s website.
  • All submissions are automatically entered into the competition for title of Environmental Photographer of the Year.

2. Nikon’s Young Environmental Photographer of the Year

  • In partnership with Nikon, this award showcases the best in environmental photography through the lens of young photographers aged 21 and under.
  • This category recognises rising talent and is open to photographers aged 21 years or younger. The winner will receive a Z Series Mirrorless camera and two NIKKOR Z lenses of their choosing, as well as an interview in CIWEM’s Environment Magazine and a feature on the Waterbear and Nikon platforms.
  • All eligible submissions  are automatically entered into the competition for title of Young Environmental Photographer of the Year.

Additional £1,000 (INR 103,629 approx) cash prizes are awarded in the following four categories:

1. MPB Vision of the Future

In partnership with MPB, this category is searching for inspiring or thought-provoking interpretations of our environment of the future as told through the photographer’s lens. 

2. Recovering Nature

This category is looking for photos that show nature’s ability to recover and for examples of innovative nature-based solutions and conservation initiatives that are “bringing nature back from the brink.” Photography that represents positive nature-based solutions and conservation and recovery schemes is encouraged.

3. Keeping 1.5 Alive

This category is looking for photos that showcase the climate emergency or climate / carbon activism, and that represent the 4 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) headline statements:

  • Understanding global warming of 1.5°C.
  • Projected climate change, potential impacts and associated risks.
  • Emission pathways and system transitions consistent with 1.5°C global warming.
  • Strengthening the global response in the context of sustainable development and efforts to eradicate poverty.

4. Adapting for Tomorrow

This category calls attention to the resilience and adaptability of our environments and the communities, flora and fauna that inhabit them.
