#IDWGS Essay: Women In Science, Science In Women by Tishtha Choudhary

Today, we are living in 21st century which is also known as the modern era. The most prominent development of this modern era is the emerging equality between men and women. Today women are giving tough competition to men in every field. This had been possible due to growing opportunities as well s active participation by women. Nowadays, women are active in varying fields be it teaching, medical jobs, field jobs like military or scientific jobs. So, to celebrate and encourage participation of women and girls in the department of science International Day for women and girls on science is marked on 11th of Feburary. 9th International Day for women and girls in science will be celebrated in 2024.

Talking about gender equality, what I believe, gender equality is intimately linked to sustainable development and is crucial to the realization of human rights for all. The overall objective of gender equality is to develop a society in which women and men enjoy the same opportunities, rights and obligations in all dimensions of life. The branch STEM plays a vital role in the economic condition of a nation STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics, they are the highly critical departments. Although the gender equality with each passing day but to our dismay, till date there is no nation having gender equality in the STEM branch. Although the field of science is expanding at a rapid at a rapid rate having main focus on climate change due to present day situations. Due to this swift expansions more opportunities are being created in the scientific field which indirectly ensures more participation of women and girls in science is to mark the importance of women and their brilliant minds in the field of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. It promotes full and equal access to both the gender in the most critically acclaimed field of any nation’s economy.

Talking about statistics, it is observed that only 22 women have been awarded Nobel Prize in science department till date which is not at all a green signal to aim of gender equality in scientific disciples backed by UNESCO. The agenda is to pay attention to intersecting inequalities through the collection and analysis of data which is systematically disaggregated by sex, age, income, disability, ethnicity, and other relevant factor.
