Description:

The NOAA Bay Watershed Education and Training (B-WET) programme is an environmental education programme that encourages K–12 students to engage in regionally relevant, real experiential learning. B-WET is primarily delivered through competitive financing that supports regional education and environmental priorities in the Pacific Northwest by promoting Meaningful Watershed Educational Experiences (MWEEs; specified in Section I.A.b) for students and related professional development for teachers. B-WET began in the Chesapeake Bay watershed in 2002 and now spans seven regions: California, the Chesapeake Bay, Hawaii, the Gulf of Mexico, New England, the Pacific Northwest, and the Great Lakes. The Office of National Marine Sanctuaries is the custodian of an undersea network that runs from Washington state to the Florida Keys, and from Lake Huron to the Gulf of Mexico. The Pacific Northwest area is defined as Oregon and Washington for the purposes of this proposal. NOAA understands that environmental stewardship requires knowledge and dedication based on first-hand experience, particularly in the context of one's community and culture. Students will be further connected to their watershed, help reinforce an ethic of responsible citizenship, and improve academic achievement through carefully selected experiences guided by strong academic learning standards, inspiring exploration and wonder, and developing a sense of community. Experiential learning strategies, such as those funded by the NOAA B-WET programme, have been demonstrated to boost STEM interest, helping NOAA meet its commitments under the America Competes Act (33 USC 893a(a)).
