Summit Theme

Sustainable development (SD) is the idea that human societies must live and meet their needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Significant coordinated efforts towards a sustainable planet have been made internationally over the past few decades. Notable milestones include the Brundtland Report in 1987 (World Commission on Environment and Development) which set the baselines for SD and more recently (2015) when the United Nations updated its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and set a target for the community of nations to achieve the same by 2030.

However, it is also clear that societal needs change from one generation to another, and predicting this is a wicked problem. Elkington’s introduction of the concept of the Triple Bottom Line (TBL), or 3P (People, Planet and Profit) in 1994 helped ease this problem but the challenge of integrating the three dimensions of sustainability: the economic profit, the societal aspects, and the environmental impact remain.

CEOs, Startup Founders, CXOs, Policy Makers, Academics, and educationists will discuss Sustainability as a new business imperative in the 2-day Leadership Summit – Global Sustainability & The Corporation organized by BML Munjal University on 17th-18th February 2022.

DAY 1: The New Business Imperative

Corporate performance and entrepreneurial activity are recognized as fundamental for economic and non-economic development, triggering job creation and improved products and services.

At the same time, the quest for profits has to be balanced with the larger goals of sustainability in an increasingly aware and conscious society.

Given the challenges posed to the planet and society – progress at any price, without considering the impact on society and the planet, is unsustainable and no longer feasible in the long run.

The business enterprise must transition from being part of the problem to being the solution in our quest for sustainability, and this transition poses many tough questions. Equally, while some new ventures and existing businesses may be a cause of environmental deterioration, today they also represent opportunities to create new business models and environmentally friendly innovations in entrepreneurship.

There is a growing realization in the corporate sector of the need to adopt sustainable business practices, however, the number of organizations making this switch is still small and needs to grow at a faster pace.

From the challenges to Transitioning to 3BL to shaping the sustainable organization and how it will impact the job landscape, individual roles, competencies, learning, and education. Three sessions led by corporate leaders, and their sustainability and HR teams will examine the new-look sustainable organization.

DAY 2: Sustainable Business Models for the Future

The role of entrepreneurs with new business models and the emerging area of Sustainable Entrepreneurship that offers an approach capable of combining economic, social, and environmental value creation, with an overall concern for the well-being of future generations. are key to achieving SDGs.

Start-ups represent an opportunity to solidify this trend at an early stage as new ventures are more aware of the need to adopt sustainable business practices.

Similarly, environmental/green entrepreneurship applies to businesses that focus primarily on profit-seeking behaviors in environmental areas (Cleantech). SE is at the heart of the triple bottom line approach.

Challengers and new entrants are more likely to exploit sustainability opportunities and to force incumbents to adopt new practices. Equally, Policy Frameworks must be revisited to empower the transition traditional to Sustainable Organizations:

The core of SE lies in sustainable value creation, i.e., a kind of value that holistically integrates economic returns, social benefits, with environmental preservation and/or regeneration. These simultaneously require a call for Best Practices in Sustainability, the implementation of a Regulatory Framework suited to sustainability
