ESA Space Gallery Competition for Children [Theme: Clouds; Win Special Prize]: Submit by June 30

Are you ready to explore space through your creativity? The European Space Agency (ESA) invites children up to 12 years of age to participate in the Space Gallery Competition 2024. This is a unique opportunity for young artists to showcase their talent and have their artwork featured on the ESA Kids website. The theme for this month's competition is Clouds.

About the European Space Agency (ESA)

The European Space Agency, founded in 1975, is a 22-member intergovernmental organization dedicated to the exploration and study of space. With its headquarters in Paris and a workforce of around 2,200 employees worldwide as of 2022, ESA operates with an annual budget of €7.8 billion. ESA collaborates with various international space agencies to advance our understanding of space and its impact on Earth.

Competition Details

Would you like to see your space-themed artwork displayed on the ESA Kids website? Here's your chance! Each month, ESA Kids delves into a different space-related theme, ranging from orbits and planets to astronauts and asteroids. The best entries will be featured in the Space Gallery and winners will receive a special prize from ESA.

This Month's Theme: Clouds

The EarthCARE satellite, a joint project between ESA and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), has recently been launched to study clouds and aerosols. EarthCARE's advanced tools help scientists understand how clouds affect weather and climate.

Types of Clouds to Inspire Your Art:

  • Cirrus Clouds: High, thin, and wispy, these clouds often indicate good weather but can signal a change.
  • Cumulus Clouds: Big, fluffy, and white, resembling cotton balls. They generally mean nice weather but can develop into storm clouds.
  • Stratus Clouds: These clouds cover the sky like a grey blanket and typically bring light rain or drizzle.
  • Nimbostratus Clouds: Thick, dark clouds that bring steady rain or snow.
  • Cumulonimbus Clouds: Towering clouds that can cause thunderstorms, heavy rain, hail, and even tornadoes.

Clouds play a crucial role in regulating Earth's temperature by reflecting sunlight and trapping heat. EarthCARE will enhance our understanding of these processes, aiding in better weather prediction and climate change research.
