The Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India provides fellowships for pursuing research in biotechnology and life-sciences through the “DBT-Junior Research Fellowship” (DBT-JRF) Programme. Initiated in the year 2004, the DBT-JRF Programme has played a critical role in nurturing skilled human resource capital and promoting research in frontier areas of biotechnology.
- Eligibility:
- Bachelors (B.E./ B.Tech./M.B.B.S) and Masters (M.Sc./
- M.Tech./ M.VSc./M. Pharm./ Integrated M.Sc./ M.Tech.) in any discipline of
- Biotechnology, Life Sciences such as Biomedical, Bioinformatics, Biochemistry,
- Biophysics, Botany, Chemistry, Computational Biology, Genetics, Microbiology,
- Zoology or any other allied areas of Biology/Life-Sciences.
- Selection Process: Fellows are selected through an online Biotechnology Eligibility Test (BET) held annually wherein two categories of merit list are prepared (Category-I and Category-II) in line with Government of India norms for reservation. Fellows selected under Category-I are eligible to avail fellowship under the programme. These fellowships are tenable at any university/institution in India where the selected fellow registers for Ph.D Programme.

2. Wellcome Trust/DBT India Alliance Senior Fellowships in India.
The DBT/Wellcome Trust India Alliance (India Alliance, www.indiaalliance.org) invites applications for its Senior and Intermediate Fellowships under the track of Basic Biomedical Research. These Fellowships are available across the full spectrum of biomedical research under the remit of India Alliance, which is to support biomedical research that is relevant to human and animal health. Interdisciplinary projects are also welcome.
- Eligibility: This competition is open for basic science/veterinary researchers with 4–15 years of post-PhD research experience; applicant can have a PhD in any discipline of science.
3. Swarna Jayanti Research Fellowships In Science And Technology.
Govt. of India had instituted a scheme “The Swarnajayanti Fellowships” to commemorate India’s fiftieth year of Independence. Under this scheme a selected number of young scientists, with proven track record, are provided special assistance and support to enable them to pursue basic research in frontier areas of science and technology.
Scientists selected for the award will be allowed to pursue unfettered research with a freedom and flexibility in terms of expenditure as approved in the research plan. The project should contain innovative research idea and it should have a potential of making impact on R&D in the discipline. The fellowships are scientist specific and not institution specific, very selective and have close academic monitoring.
- Eligibility: They should be between the age group of 30 and 40. They must have a PhD in either Medicine, Engineering, or Science. They must be employed on a regular basis by research or academic organisation recognised by the Indian government.
- Amount: The award consists of a Fellowship of Rs 25000/- per month in addition to the salary drawn from the parent Institute for a period of 5 years, The fellows selected along with their projects will be considered for funding by the Science & Engineering Research Board (SERB) as per SERB norms, for fellowship, recurring and non-recurring heads.

4. Raman Charpak Fellowship Program.
The Raman–Charpak Fellowship programme is in honour of two Nobel Laureates in Physics, Prof C.V. Raman, Indian Nobel Laureate (1930) and Prof Georges Charpak, French Nobel Laureate (1992). The Fellowship was launched during the State visit of the President of France to India during in February, 2013.
The aim is to facilitate the exchange of doctoral students between the two countries, in order to broaden the scope and depth of future engagements in Science, Technology and Innovation.
- Eligibility: Indian & French PhD research scholars and Maters Students [only from France (included from year 2016)].
- Duration: 2 to 6 months
- Areas: Atmospheric Sciences, Earth Sciences and Environmental Sciences, Materials Sciences, Physical Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Engineering Sciences, Biological Sciences, Life and Medical Sciences, Mathematical and Computational Sciences.
- Amount:
- For Indian Fellow:Fellowship Support of 1500 Euros per month for daily expenses, local travel, accommodation charges plus Social Security charges
- For French Fellow: Fellowship support Rs. 40,000 per month for daily expenses, local travel etc. plus accommodation charges not exceeding Rs. 45,000 per month
- One return airfare ticket in economy class

5. KIIT University International Scholarships for International Students in India.
The International Students Scholarship Scheme is funded by the University directly and aims to provide financial assistance to students from overseas who are applying to study at the University of KIIT.

6. Wellcome Trust/DBT India Alliance Early Career Fellowships for International Applicants in India
DBT/Wellcome Trust India Alliance invites applications for its Early Career Fellowships in Basic Biomedical Research. This is a mentored Fellowship programme that provides a unique opportunity for promising postdoctoral researchers to carry out high-quality biomedical research in India towards building an independent research career.
- Eligibility:
- Applicant must be in the final year of PhD or have no more than four years of post-PhD research experience from the date of PhD viva to the invited full application submission deadline (tentatively in November 2021 for the current round of competition); due consideration will be given to justified non-research career breaks
- Applicant may either have completed or be pursuing PhD in any discipline of science; however, the proposed research work must be within the funding remit of India Alliance
- There are no restrictions based on age or nationality.
- Amount: The upper limit for an award is INR 1.7 Crores.
